For many years, Spain and Poland have occupied very different positions within Europe’s strategic landscape. Geography, recent history and distinct security priorities appeared to place them at opposite ends of the strategic conversation.<\/p>\n
While Poland has traditionally focused much of its attention on NATO’s Eastern Flank and its relationship with Russia, Spain has historically looked towards the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Atlantic. Two seemingly distant realities, two different strategic agendas and two distinct approaches to security.<\/p>\n
Yet the geopolitical landscape of recent years is reshaping that perception.<\/p>\n
Russia’s war against Ukraine, the deterioration of the international security environment, intensifying great-power competition and the European Union’s growing ambition to strengthen its strategic autonomy are bringing the interests of both countries closer together than is often recognised.<\/p>\n
Not because their priorities are identical, but because European security increasingly requires an understanding that these priorities are all part of the same strategic system.<\/p>\n

Europe can no longer assess its security through a purely regional lens.<\/p>\n
Protecting NATO’s Eastern Flank remains an undeniable priority following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Poland has emerged as one of Europe’s leading defence actors, significantly increasing defence spending, strengthening its military capabilities and playing a critical role as a logistics hub for support to Ukraine and the Allied presence across Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n
However, this does not diminish the strategic importance of Europe’s other frontiers.<\/p>\n
The Mediterranean continues to face challenges related to regional stability, the protection of critical infrastructure, migration flows, maritime security and competition over strategic resources. At the same time, the Atlantic is regaining strategic relevance as trade routes, submarine cables, energy infrastructure and connectivity once again become central geopolitical assets.<\/p>\n
Spain occupies a uniquely strategic position within this environment.<\/p>\n
If Poland represents one of the pillars of European security on the Eastern Flank, Spain is one of the European Union’s key strategic assets on its Southern Flank and across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n
Europe needs both perspectives.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There is another area that brings both countries particularly close together: military mobility.<\/p>\n
For years, it was regarded as a technical issue concerning the movement of troops and military equipment. Today, it has become one of the European Union’s strategic priorities.<\/p>\n
The reason is straightforward. A common European defence policy depends not only on possessing military capabilities, but also on the ability to deploy them rapidly wherever they are needed.<\/p>\n
Rail corridors adapted for military use, dual-use ports, strategically capable airports, resilient transport networks, digital coordination systems and harmonised administrative procedures now form part of the same strategic agenda. In this context, Poland plays a vital role as the gateway to Europe’s Eastern Flank, while Spain offers significant potential as a logistics platform linking the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the rest of the continent.<\/p>\n
Rather than competing with one another, both countries occupy complementary positions within Europe’s security architecture.<\/p>\n
Military mobility also illustrates one of the most significant transformations currently taking place across Europe: defence can no longer be understood solely through a military lens.<\/p>\n
Discussing military mobility also means discussing infrastructure, transport, energy, engineering, digitalisation, cybersecurity, industrial capacity and resilience. In other words, it is increasingly becoming a matter of European economic policy.<\/p>\n

This transformation is also reshaping the role of industry.<\/p>\n
Building Europe’s new defence industrial base no longer depends exclusively on traditional defence manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Technology companies, infrastructure firms, logistics operators, energy providers, software developers, telecommunications companies and artificial intelligence specialists are playing an increasingly important role.<\/p>\n
Spain and Poland share another significant characteristic: both are steadily expanding their security and defence industrial ecosystems. In both countries, sector growth is accompanied by greater participation in European programmes, increasing internationalisation of industry and sustained efforts to attract new industrial capabilities.<\/p>\n
Cooperation between the two countries has the potential to generate considerable added value\u2014not only through bilateral initiatives, but also by jointly strengthening European industrial supply chains, promoting multinational consortia and developing capabilities aligned with the European Union’s strategic priorities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
European policymaking is often portrayed as a balancing act between national interests. Experience suggests, however, that the greatest progress is achieved when Member States recognise that their priorities are not competing, but complementary.<\/p>\n
Spain and Poland exemplify this reality.<\/p>\n
Both are major European economies. Both occupy strategically important geographical positions for Europe’s security. Both possess expanding industrial capabilities and share a growing commitment to strengthening the continent’s defence capacity.<\/p>\n
Each brings a different perspective.<\/p>\n
Precisely for that reason, they can achieve far more by working together.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The European Union has embarked on an unprecedented transformation of its security and defence policy. Financial resources are increasing, industrial capabilities are being reorganised and European institutions are fostering ever-closer cooperation among Member States.<\/p>\n
Yet no common strategy will succeed through funding or institutional reform alone.<\/p>\n
It will also require stronger partnerships between those countries capable of contributing complementary capabilities while sharing a common vision for Europe’s future.<\/p>\n
Spain and Poland possess many of these qualities.<\/p>\n
Perhaps because, for many years, they looked towards different strategic horizons. Or perhaps because today’s geopolitical environment has demonstrated that protecting Europe is no longer about defending a single frontier.<\/p>\n
It is about recognising that every frontier forms part of the same shared security.<\/p>\n
In that context, cooperation between Madrid and Warsaw has the potential to become one of the strongest pillars upon which the next phase of European defence can be built.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
